Butcher's Field, Golden Meadow Project

The Queen's Golden Jubilee 2002

On Monday 21 January 2002 the Westham Parish Council approved the above project.

Over the next few weeks Butcher's Field (near the famous Pevensey Castle) will begin a long term transformation towards becoming a beautiful wild flower meadow.

We are working together towards an anticpated formal opening date of 3 June 2002, for the Queens Golden Jubilee.

* Week commencing 25 February tree work scheduled to begin to make safe some of the old ashes at the back of the field. This work has been held up by recent weather conditions but is still scheduled for the next few weeks.
* The Parish is planning to make available benches in the meadow to enable visitors to sit and enjoy views of the castle, meadow and its wildlife.
* Tree Planting will take place in the near future to further enhance the meadow.
* Do you have any pictures of Butcher's field from 50 years ago that could be used in this site? If so, please forward them to the Parish Clerk with a covering letter, so that they can be consideredfor inclusion here. Pictures will be returned.

What plants will grow in Butcher's Field Golden Meadow? Based on the plants growing in nearby wildflower areas the following list has been compiled of some of the plants to be encouraged in the meadow over the next few years. This will be by seed sowing, turf donation or transplanting individual plants. Over the next few weeks pictures of many of these flowers will, hopefully, be made available - so that you know what to look out for!
